TICKET MACHINE by Gavin Manners — CODA Open Lab

We’re excited to introduce our Open Lab series — the initiative that helps popularize hard-surface and sci-fi art with experienced professionals from the community!

For this episode, we collaborated with Gavin Manners — Principal Concept Artist at id Software — to design a handheld ticket printer set in a cassette futurism world. Chunky, tactile tech where ID cards slot in like floppy disks and print a sticky label with your journey details and a grainy photo of your face.
Here’s a look at Gavin’s design process. He explored 4 distinct directions, each pushed to closed and open states, and developed one for the final concept that is ready for modeling.
